The host/parasite relationship in nature is a strange, fascinating one. There are many reasons why this relationship exists, including population control, boosting immune response, aiding decomposition and supporting the food web. While most parasites do not kill their hosts, what compels those that do? In our culture, the word “parasite” has a decidedly negative connotation. Though literal parasites are seeking only to live, parasite/host relationships present between humans result in toxic power dynamics, financial instability, breakdowns of bodies and minds, and loss of benefit to both parties over time. The work in this exhibition was made to explore parasitic relationships in all their forms. Where do we get the energy we need to sustain ourselves? Are those sources sustainable or part of a system that ultimately depletes us? This group of female artists met over the course of six months to discuss their interpretations of the show concept. Each artist is exploring the theme from her own unique perspective. The work includes depictions of parasites in nature in addition to examinations of family dynamics, childbirth, beauty, sexuality, and dysfunctional relationships in the context of parasitism.

‘Dark Matter’, in a scientific sense, has never been directly observed; however, its existence would explain a number of otherwise puzzling astronomical observations. We’ve asked artists to consider how existence and puzzling realities…and fantasies, play in to their own work and interpretation of the universe.

Do you feel that we may be in the new ‘dark ages’ with regards to our environment or political climate? The work in this exhibition asks you, the viewer as well, to consider the broader ideas of the human and cultural experience.

The Northern Vermont Artist Association was founded right here in Burlington, VT in 1931 by Harold S. Knight and a group of Vermont artists in search of venues for their art. One of the first members of this new art organization was the renowned American painter, Maxfield Parrish.

From 1931 through 1972 the NVAA held its annual member show at the Robert Hull Fleming Museum at UVM. Exhibitions have since moved around Vermont in locations large enough for the membership. Over the last 86 years, many important Vermont artists have exhibited their work in one or more of these shows, including Francis Colburn, Ruth Mould, Stan Marc Wright, Emile Gruppe, Mary and Alden Bryan and Roy Kennedy.

Today, the NVAA offers its members the opportunity to show their work in many lovely locations, and for the second annual exhibition in August, here in the heart of the South End Arts District at The Space Gallery in Burlington.

Statement on ‘Conjuring: She Rises’:

325 years ago, the Salem Witch Trials were an example of a hysteria that people can experience when faced with fear. Witch hunts, whether hunting actual witches, or not, are a serious global threat. Conjuring: She Rises is a group show of 13 artists in honor of the anniversary of the Salem Witch Trial. These artists use art as a political agent of change to reclaim the power of vulnerability over terror.
