The Space Gallery is built on ideals of being accessible; to artists
and viewers alike. For us, this means that you may show your artwork regardless of your age, medium, and experience in the arts. Everyone needs a first gallery exhibition and we have seen artists go on to New York City, Chicago, or stay right here in Vermont, fulfilling their dreams of becoming a full time artist and making a living at it. For all of May, Space Gallery Members showcase pieces of artwork that they are proud of, is new for them, or best exemplifies their specific style. This also serves as a pre-view of the artists work that we will be showing throughout the coming year.

For the viewer; accessibility to us means that someone may visit the
gallery who may not have been in a formal exhibition setting before
and ask any question and feel comfortable doing so. Artists may walk in as well with questions about how to show or price work, and receive advice or critiques on their portfolio. We take pride in showing artwork and will always do so professionally.

In honor of the anniversary of the passing of the Fair Housing Act and in remembrance of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, April is set aside as National Fair Housing Month.

2018 coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. Former President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, signing fair housing into law.

“Now, with this bill, the voice of justice speaks again,” Johnson said
as he signed the bill. “It proclaims that fair housing for all, all
human beings who live in this country, is now part of the American way of life.”

This April, The Space Gallery is honored to show the wonderful work of Kylie Dally and Corrine Yonce who have created paintings of, with, and for the residents of Burlington Housing Authority.

‘Wharf Lane Community Painting’ with Kylie Dally

With the guidance of Kylie Dally, a series of nature paintings were created with residents of Wharf Lane Apartments in Burlington as a way to connect them with nature, art, and community. Utilizing plants sourced in the area, the work is to be permanently installed in their building this summer.

Residents wanted art, colorful walls, and to have some control over the appearance of their living environment, and with the financial assistance of a Burlington City Arts Community Fund Grant, the work has done just that.

Corrine Yonce’s series, ‘Voices of Home’ combines the audio narratives and painted portraits of affordable housing residents of Decker Towers and South Burlington Community Housing. The result is vibrant work that demonstrates the importance of safe, healthy, and affordable homes.

Yonce has received support for the project from Burlington City Arts, the Vermont Arts Council, Fair Housing Vermont, Curtis Lumber and worked in collaboration with Vermont Affordable Housing Coalition. She is currently the artist in resident at New City Gallery on Church Street, Burlington.

‘Don’t Be A Stranger’ photography series by Christy Mitchell taken by Luke Awtry

Each November, The Space Gallery Director, Christy Mitchell, recounts her past year with a conceptual solo exhibition in the form of an autobiographical installation using various media. The work is presented in such a way that the viewer may also see themselves in the story line, identifying with broader concepts of social interaction, relationships, and human or cultural experiences.

Following 2016’s ‘IRL’, a story about finding love in the digital age, ‘Don’t Be A Stranger’ is a telling of just how arduous dating ‘in real life’ can be. Modern terms such as ‘ghosting’ reference the tired game of waiting by the phone for someone who may never call. Mitchell uses vintage rotary phones, collage, photography, and set design in a palette which compliment a mid-century era noir film aesthetic, a thriller in fact, asking who done it?

There is an ever present power flow within the context of the ritual of dating. The one with the power to shoot someone down, the one who takes that power back by denying the dominance of the other….who is holding the gun? …or sent that last message?

‘Dark Matter’, in a scientific sense, has never been directly observed; however, its existence would explain a number of otherwise puzzling astronomical observations. We’ve asked artists to consider how existence and puzzling realities…and fantasies, play in to their own work and interpretation of the universe.

Do you feel that we may be in the new ‘dark ages’ with regards to our environment or political climate? The work in this exhibition asks you, the viewer as well, to consider the broader ideas of the human and cultural experience.

Call to Artists: Small Works Holiday Exhibtion

Small Works Holiday Exhibition

Non-Juried! Artists of all trades may exhibit work that measures 12″ or smaller in all directions! 

Small Works Exhibition Registration Form
Open Now Until Thursday, December 1 at 3pm.

Seeking work for a ‘Small Works’ Exhibition, a two month show!
Open to all artists and mediums. Non-juried, though all work must measure 12″ or smaller in all directions, (excluding any mounting or framing). $5 entry fee per submission, up to ten pieces.

Work will be installed in a horizontal line spanning the walls of the main exhibition room. Visitors may cruise the room and pick out their favorites!

Open for First Friday Art Walks:
December 2nd & January 6, South End Holiday Markets through the month, and gallery open hours.
