Whether sent from the universe or embedded in our DNA, messages and events can suddenly arrive and change the course of our lives. 

Artist Christy Mitchell creates a solo show each November to decipher and express those moments from the previous year. In ‘Point of Impact’ she tackles the hard reality of caring for family members struggling with their mental health.

Appearing in waves, hitting hard like an asteroid making contact with Earth, watching a loved one go through crisis can feel like the end of the world. An impact event is where there is a collision between astronomical objects, some causing catastrophic consequences.  In this exhibition, Christy attempts to illustrate what navigating life in the middle of a meteor shower may look like, with assemblages and objects being thrown together creating a beautiful, chaotic, and often scary landscape.

Art Hop Showcase & Celebration of New Space Ownership! First Friday Reception October 6

The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery hosted a WONDERFUL and vibrant South End Art Hop a few weeks ago, it was great seeing so many of your smiling faces and a LOT of artwork found new homes! Experience over 600 works of art by 60 of our talented Space Gallery Member Artists again or for the first time.

There’s also more to celebrate as Nikki Laxar steps into the exciting new role as the Owner and Art Director of the Space Gallery! Former Director and founder, Christy Mitchell will join in the festivities and fun conversations.

Please join us on Friday October 6th from 5-8pm for light refreshments and great art!

THE ART OF THE BOOK

An exhibition of handmade artists’ books by the members and friends of the Book Arts Guild of Vermont

Is the physical book coming to an end?  Not according to artists who seek to interpret ‘the book’ as a means of creative expression.  The concept of the artist’s book can take many forms and encompass various techniques, including collage, printmaking, papermaking, sewing, graphic design, calligraphy, and digital techniques.  The end result is an artwork that tells a story, relates a feeling, or sends a message through the interaction of the materials, structure, and content. Regardless of form, the artist’s book contains the vision of the artist, but is meant to be shared with the reader.    

The Book Arts Guild of Vermont (B.A.G.) was established in 2005 to offer learning opportunities in and around the field of book arts, and to create a supportive and welcoming environment for new and established artists and craftspeople.  Our mission is to promote greater public awareness of book arts, increase opportunities for members to exhibit their work, and inspire and encourage creativity and the sharing of book arts in our community.  Monthly meetings feature hands-on projects, demonstrations, lectures, and discussions.

‘Clearing Space’ A Spring Cleaning – Art Auction!

Lost and found treasures await you in this eclectic silent auction to benefit The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery. Since opening in 2009, the gallery has acquired a number of artworks both donated or left behind that are now searching for their new owners! The perfect time of year for Spring cleaning, we are dusting the cobwebs and ‘Clearing Space’ for new works. Silent auction begins on First Friday, April 7 and continues through Saturday, April 29. ‘All the Feels’ asked artists to submit work that exudes emotion, and they delivered! “How do you feel during the creation process? Does the content of your work bring joy, angst, humor? What emotions does the viewer go through when experiencing the art?” Creative minds can make art that is both gorgeous and off putting and we invite you to feel ‘all the feels’ with this gritty exhibition of local artists’ work.

Experience artwork by over 80 local artists, with sculpture, assemblage, collage, paintings, prints, and more!

Cold weather is dangerous! For the opening on Friday, February 3 please stay home if you need to travel very far or do not have reliable transportation. Bundle up with face and hand coverings and we will turn up the heat!
