‘The Shape of Things’ July 1 – August 6, 2022

‘The Shape of Things’ July 1 – August 6, 2022

‘Clouds’ (detail) sculpture by Kevin Donegan

The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery is honored to host an exhibition many months in the making. The title, ‘The Shape of Things’ feels even more poignant now as we struggle to make sense of our world, how we express ourselves, and how we may work together as a community to lift each other up in the face of oppression and seemingly insurmountable challenges. Gallery Director, Christy Mitchell, approached four artists in the past year to participate in a show simply about shape. These artists create work that plays with geometry and with patterns that literally or figuratively appear to float off the standard 2-D frame.

Kevin Donegan, an artist working just down the street, joins us from a recent residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Donegan states, “The intent of this installation is to create an environment which feels ominous and potentially dangerous, but also beautiful and serene. Touching on themes of climate change, escapism, and the slippery nature of perception, it attempts to engage viewers viscerally and intellectually, and is rooted in the artist’s desire to affect change.”

Will Patlove has been exhibiting with us from time to time for a decade and we thoroughly enjoy his playful interpretation of what the shape of a painted surface can be. Bent and manipulated pieces covered in canvas or carved and cut wood become multi-faceted planes in which Patlove applies his minimalist color palettes.

Frank Tamasi is a newer artist to The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery and creates meticulous geometric pieces by hand (without tape or straight edges) feeling each line and selecting each color deliberately. Tamasi states that, “Color theory plays a vital role in my work allowing me to express inner-energies that otherwise leave me at a loss of words….The layering of colors immerse you deeper and deeper as you look at it longer. It creates an experience that not only brings light into any room, but ignites an emotion internally through the vibrations.”

Haley Fenn expresses herself through form, both with one of a kind jewelry and with sculptures that play with hard geometric edges and softer shapes and palettes. Fenn’s work draws you in, you notice it in any room, as if the work has something to say and it will tell you if you just listen long enough. A first time showing with us, we are thrilled to host a series of her sculptures in this exhibition.

June 11 – August 7, 2021

Closing Reception: Friday, August 6 from 6pm – 9pm
Artist Talk: 7:30pm

Set in an early 20th century Victorian style home, ‘Holding Pattern’ imagines conversations and changes to everyday life experienced over many decades and family dynamics. If these walls could talk about the things that we say and what we hide from the public, what would they tell us? Christy Mitchell combines artifacts from the past to tell stories about modern day topics that have affected her, but are also universal. As we are collectively released from the holding pattern of the last year, a critical eye must be trained on what we will take with us and what should be left behind.

‘All the Feels’ February – April, 2021

‘All the Feels’

The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery curated hallways of The Soda Plant
February 19 – April 30, 2021

Featured here; Art by Dana Heffern, Andrew Prendimano, Alan Shulman, Nikki Laxar

In years past, the ‘All the Feels’ exhibition at The S.P.A.C.E. Gallery has felt both lighthearted, exploring themes of love, as well as diving deeper and commenting on the current political climate. In 2021, amidst a pandemic, the feelings have predominantly turned inward or about how we interact with each other. 40+ artists have created work with the prompt of ’emotion’, whether it was felt during the creation of the piece, in the content of the work, or how the viewer would interpret it later. We sure are feeling it, but one thing is certain, it feels good to be showing artwork again after a year of keeping our distance.
